Bishop José Lai was born in Macao. On 20th March 2001, he was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Macao by Pope John Paul II. On June 2nd, he received the Episcopal consecration in the Cathedral in Macao. On 30th June 2003, Bishop Domingos Lam retired, and according to the law of the Catholic Church, Bishop Lai took over the position of the Bishop of Macao. Bishop José Lai gave the biggest attention to the better exploitation of resources, deeper formation for the Catholics, closer cooperation between the priests and the laity, providing better service to all and spreading the Good News of the Kingdom of God, In 2016, the Bishop Lai was resigned and approved by the Pope Francis for his health problem.
