Bishop Jerónimo José da Mata was a member of the Congregation of the Mission and first came to Macao in 1825 when he studied in St. Joseph's Seminary.  After his ordination, he stayed in Macao and was appointed Bishop in 1845.  During his mission, he reconstructed the Cathedral and established the St. Miguel's cemetery.
