Bishop Marcelino José da Silva was appointed Bishop of Macao in 1789 and assumed his duty in 1791.  During his service, he renovated the Bishop's Office, the seminary and many churches.  He also established a shelter for orphans and widows Because he had attempted to reform the undesirable practice of the time he infuriated the ranking officials in Macao.  Feeling frustrated, he resigned in 1803 and returned to Portugal where he died in 1830.
